Where Imagination Meets Technology: Disney’s New Resort in Abu Dhabi
In a move that marks a bold new chapter in its 101-year history, The Walt Disney Company has announced plans to open a brand-new theme park resort in Abu Dhabi—the entertainment giant’s first new global destination since Shanghai Disney Resort opened in 2016, and its first-ever theme park in the Middle East.
The resort will be located on Yas Island, a dynamic entertainment hub in the capital of the United Arab Emirates, already home to Ferrari World, Warner Bros. World, and SeaWorld Abu Dhabi. The project represents a landmark expansion for Disney, blending world-class storytelling and immersive technology in a region where tourism is growing rapidly.
A Historic First for the Region
The Abu Dhabi development will become Disney’s seventh global resort destination, marking the company's entry into the Middle East. It is being developed in partnership with Miral, the UAE-based developer behind many of Yas Island’s iconic attractions.
In the official announcement, Disney CEO Bob Iger described the project as “authentically Disney and distinctly Emirati,” highlighting its unique cultural fusion. While Miral will fund, own, and operate the resort, Walt Disney Imagineering—the company’s famed creative division—will lead the design and development of the park.
Technology at the Heart of the Magic
This new Abu Dhabi resort is poised to become Disney’s most technologically advanced theme park to date, serving as a showcase for how entertainment, storytelling, and innovation can merge on an unprecedented scale. According to The Walt Disney Company, the park will be designed entirely from the ground up, enabling the integration of next-generation technology at every stage of development.
At the forefront of this evolution is the use of real-time interactivity, allowing attractions to respond dynamically to guest choices and behaviour. For example, Disney’s existing use of interactive wearables and mobile apps—such as MagicBands and the Play Disney Parks app—may be significantly enhanced, potentially enabling guests to personalise their journey through the park in real time.
In addition, artificial intelligence and machine learning are expected to play a key role in delivering deeply immersive and adaptive experiences. Disney has already begun experimenting with AI-driven character interactions, such as autonomous droids in Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, and lifelike character animatronics that can react to guests’ presence and respond with emotion or dialogue. The Abu Dhabi park is expected to build on this foundation with smarter, more responsive characters and interactive environments.
Another major area of focus is augmented and mixed reality, which will likely be woven into attraction design, live shows, and even retail and dining spaces. Through devices or wearable tech, guests may be able to see virtual elements layered onto physical environments—transforming familiar surroundings into living, evolving stories.
Digital storytelling, which already underpins much of Disney’s park design, will be taken even further through the integration of cloud-based systems, data personalisation, and immersive projection mapping. These technologies allow for real-time environmental changes and story shifts based on guest input, time of day, or even group dynamics—turning each visit into a unique narrative experience.
This technological ambition is not just about novelty; it reflects a broader shift in how Disney envisions the future of themed entertainment: flexible, personalised, and endlessly evolving. With Abu Dhabi as the testing ground for this next generation of innovation, the park is set to redefine what a theme park can be in the digital age.
A Strategic Move for Disney and the UAE
The project aligns with the UAE’s Vision 2031 strategy, which prioritises economic diversification and cultural enrichment. By establishing a major Disney presence in the Gulf, the resort is expected to drive international tourism and support long-term growth in the region’s leisure and entertainment sectors.
For Disney, the Abu Dhabi park represents a renewed commitment to international growth and innovation following the challenges of the pandemic era. It also signals a shift toward strategic partnerships, where Disney contributes its intellectual property and creative expertise, while local partners manage funding and operations.
Looking Ahead
While an exact opening date has yet to be confirmed, Disney expects construction on the Abu Dhabi resort to begin soon, with the park projected to open between 2030 and 2033. Given the scale and ambition of the project, the development will span several years and unfold in carefully planned stages.
As the resort takes shape, Disney will gradually reveal more details about the park’s themed lands, attractions, and guest experiences. In the meantime, anticipation continues to build for what promises to be a groundbreaking destination—where imagination, culture, and cutting-edge technology come together in a spectacular celebration.
